Homeschooling vs public school – Is this why parents home school?

‘Is the System failing to teach children how to think?’

A former new Labour aide who worked closely with Tony Blair, Peter Hyman outlined that there should be a radical shake up of the education system where GCSE’’s would be abolished.  It was also highlighted that he was convinced that the government’s direction was wrong.

This was just days before hundreds of thousands of pupils picked up their A-level results and a week before GCSE grades were released; Hyman says the nature of the exam system means that children are not being taught how to think. Hyman, who was a government speechwriter and strategist, is now a deputy head teacher at a London comprehensive. “This [criticism] is aimed at government,” he said. “I blame the system – not schools for doing what they are told.” His plea comes as a poll of company directors today reveals widespread dissatisfaction. One in five directors describes the quality of education in schools as poor or very poor, with half rating it as average.

The Institute of Directors surveyed 1,316 of its members and found that one-third admitted having employees who lacked literacy, numeracy or low-level IT skills, with 70% of those saying it causes a significant problem for their business. The vast majority want much higher priority placed on literacy, numeracy and skills such as public speaking.

In an article in the Observer (16/8/09), Hyman wrote: “There is almost an unspoken deal: we’ll spoon-feed you the required information to pass your exams, if you play by the rules and do your homework on time … GCSE exam results are not a true reflection of the talent of my students … It is time to scrap them.” Is this the reason for homeschooling vs public school?

Hyman calls for a system in which all teenagers take a variety of exams and carry out extended projects between the ages of 14 and 19. A-levels could be incorporated alongside many other options but not as a standalone qualification. Christine Blower, general secretary of the NUT, said: “Standing inside a classroom is very different to standing inside a government department.” Referring to the MP Vernon Coaker, she added: “It will be interesting now that we have a schools minister who has been a teacher.”

A spokeswoman for the Department for Children, Schools and Families said there was already a range of choices for pupils, such as diplomas and apprenticeships. GCSE reform next month would also mean more varied questions.

New Conservative plans for A-levels and GCSEs emerged last night. Some of the proposals being considered include giving more points in school league tables for A-levels achieved in “hard” subjects, such as maths and physics, and fewer points for so-called “soft” subjects such as media studies; and removing vocational qualifications, including the government’s flagship new diploma, from league table rankings because they are “nowhere near as academically demanding”.

Michael Gove, the shadow children’s secretary, told the Sunday Telegraph that Labour’s “meddling and micromanaging of exams” had “dumbed down” the system. Homeschooling vs public school you decide?

Home School Cirriculum – Should I Homeschool my children?

One of the first questions most parents ask is does home schooling actually work, and isn’t it going to take up to much of my time, how can I get all that I need done and home school. However homeschoolers are aware that all the worries and woes get done, especially when one knows about the barrage of current headlines of failing standards in education. Parents are also only too aware of the fact that the public schools have problems, but really wonder whether they can do any better. One natural response for some parents is to try a little harder to see if they can afford private schooling but, even if this were possible, are the private schools faring any better than the public schools? Would a home school curriculum help the situation in anyway.

The simple fact of the matter is that there are many, quality studies which show that, on average, home schooling produces actually superior students. To an extent of course this is understandable as parents clearly have an effect on education no matter which route they take. A parent who is genuinely interested in the education of his or her children who provides a home School Cirriculum, the resources, help to motivate their children, will often produce better results as the children are receiving a lot of individual support and intervention this is often a help not an hindrance, particulary for children with additional needs.

In the United States the Department of Education agrees. In one study which they sponsored themselves home schooled students produced exceptionally high test scores. The median scores in every grade were far higher than those of public schools and even higher than those of private school students. The average home schooled student in grades one through to four was a grade level above that of public school peers and, by the time home schooled students reached the equivalent of the 8th grade, they were as much as four years ahead of students attending public school.

As if this were not enough, costs were also lower. On average, government schools spent $6,500 per student each year and private schools spent $3,500. By contrast, parents undertaking home schooling spent about $550 per student each year. This figure for home schooling does not of course take into account the time spent by parents on home schooling for which a public school teacher would be paid.

The public school system as we know it today evolved during the second half of the 19th century as one state after another made school attendance compulsory. Perhaps the most interesting question however, and one which rarely seems to be asked, is why, if public schooling offered such superior value, why was necessary for the states to make it compulsory and to force  parents to put their children into the public school system. Which appears to be a very interesting point to ponder on.

It could be, and sometimes is, argued that this was due to the ignorance of rural parents who did not see the value of education. However, it is interesting to note that adult illiteracy rates in 1840 Massachusetts were as low as 2% and that, by 1995, this figure had risen to 19%, in spite of apparently enormous advances in the intervening years. In 1840 libraries were rare and today they are everywhere as books are both relatively inexpensive and easy to trade.

Today in the United States over a million children are home schooled and thousands of home schooled students have attended colleges and universities, including many of the most prestigious and difficult to get into.

Whatever your own thoughts about home schooling vs public schooling or  whether a homeschool curriculum would work for you there is no doubt that the results clearly show the advantage of home schooling.

Michigan Homeschooling- Educational Information For You!!

This is not intended to be legal advice it is distributed for information purposes. Check for updates at your public library and on the Michigan State Department Education page: Information on Home Schools.

Michigan’s Compulsory School Attendance Law

The Michigan homeschooling community should be aware of the following: The law states that “every parent, guardian, or other person in this state having control and charge of a child from the age of 6 to the child’s 16th birthday, shall send that child to the public schools during the entire school year” (MCL 380.1561, Section 1561[1]). Thankfully, Michigan’s Compulsory School Attendance law also contains exemptions so that all children between the ages of 6 and 16 do NOT have to attend a public school.

MCL 380.1561, Section 1561(3): “A child is not required to attend a public school in any of the following cases:

(a) The child is attending regularly and is being taught in a state approved non-public school, which teaches subjects comparable to those taught in the public schools to children of corresponding age and grade, as determined by the course of study for the public schools of the district within which the non-public school is located.

…(b), (c) and (d) are exemptions for students living extremely far from transportation to public school, and for those in attendance in confirmation or religious classes…

(e) The child has graduated from high school or has fulfilled all requirements for high school graduation.

(f) The child is being educated at the child’s home by his or her parent or legal guardian in an organized educational program in the subject areas of Reading, Spelling, Mathematics, Science, History, Civics, Literature, Writing and English Grammar.”

MCL 380.1561, Section 1561(4): “Exemption from the requirement to attend the public school may exist under either subsection (3)(a) or (3)(f), or both, for a child being educated at the child’s home by his or her parent or legal guardian.”

Home Educating Under Exemption (3)(a) as a Non-Public School

If a family chooses to home school under exemption (3)(a) as a non-public school, they will be under the authority of the MDE. The MDE has authority over all non-public schools and home educators operating under exemption (3)(a) because the Non-Public School Act of 1921 gives them that authority. All non-public schools must comply with the requirements of the Act which includes the following:

388.551 Section 1. The superintendent of public instruction is hereby given supervision of all the private, denominational and parochial schools of this state in such matters and manner as is hereinafter provided… It is the intent of this act that the sanitary conditions of such schools, the courses of study therein, and the qualifications of the teachers thereof shall be of the same standard as provided by the general school laws of the state.

388.553 Section 3. No person shall teach or give instruction in any of the regular or elementary grade studies in any private, denominational or parochial school within this state who does not hold a certificate such as would qualify him or her to teach in like grades of the public schools of the state.

388.555 Section 5. The superintendent of public instruction by himself, his assistants, or any duly authorized agent, shall have authority at any time to investigate and examine into the conditions of any school operating under this act… and it shall be the duty of such school to admit such superintendent… or authorized agent, and to submit for examination its sanitary condition, the records of enrollment of pupils, its courses of studies… and the qualifications of its teachers.

What Should a Non-Public School Home School Do if they wish to Exist?

To begin a non-public school home school you simply begin home schooling. You do NOT have to ask permission, get a license or even a permit to get started.

You do NOT have to request a Non-Public School Membership Reporting Form (form SM4325).

You must be or use a certified teacher (or claim a religious exemption to this requirement).

You must teach curriculum comparable to that taught in your local school district according to your child’s age and grade.

You must provide information regarding “enrollment of pupils, courses of studies and the qualifications of teachers” if, and only if, the Superintendent of Public Instruction or one of his/her “authorized agents” requests this information from you. You may report this information on the SM4325 form, or you may simply submit to the MDE a letter providing the information required by law.

You must submit to investigations and/or examinations by the superintendent or his agent “at any time” at your “non-public school” (your home), unless you are willing to refuse this kind of intrusion into your home and are willing to have the operation of your school suspended, and/or be taken to court over the matter. Although no school official has attempted this type of harassment, anyone choosing this exemption should know that the possibility exists for this to happen.

Home Educating Under Exemption (3)(f) as a Home Education Program

Michigan homeschooling Families choosing to home school under exemption (3)(f) are not required to do any type of reporting to any school official. If you are sent a SM4325 form, you do not have to return it or make any type of response. The MDE has stated that, “If the home school family has not registered, the Department will consider the home school family to be operating under the exemption (f) solely.” There is also no law requiring that any information be provided to the local or intermediate school district. Therefore, a home school existing under (3)(f) has no responsibility to provide any information to local school officials.

To begin a home education program you simply begin home schooling. You do NOT have to ask permission, get a license or even a permit. You do NOT have to request a Non-Public School Membership Reporting Form (form SM4325). You must provide your children instruction in the subject areas of Reading, Spelling, Mathematics, Science, History, Civics, Literature, Writing and English Grammar.”

The Michigan Department of Education’s Position on the Exemptions

The following statements have been taken from a Question & Answer document which the MDE provided to all of the Local and Intermediate School District Superintendents. It details how they have interpreted their role concerning the exemptions available to home educators.

“A home school family choosing to operate under exemption (a) solely, and complying with the requirements of the Non-Public School Act is considered a non-public school.”

“A home school family choosing to operate under both exemptions (a) and (f) must comply with the requirements of both (a) and (f).”

“A home school family choosing to operate under exemption (f) solely, is NOT a non-public school and NEED NOT comply with the requirements of the Non-Public School Act.”

“The MDE plays no role with this (the family choosing exemption (f) solely) home schooling family.”

“There are no minimum qualifications for the teachers (in an exemption (f) solely home school) except that they must be the parents or legal guardians of the children.”

“The (exemption (f) solely) home school family does not report to the MDE.”

“Question: How does a home school family operating under exemption (f) provide an organized educational program in the subject areas of reading, spelling, mathematics, science, history, civics, literature, writing and English Grammar?
Answer: The state does not regulate the content of the basic courses.”

In Bible versus Quran: the heir is a child, although he owns the whole estate

The Sons of the Lord God in Bible versus Quran (17)

This is the 17th article of the series:” The Sons of the Lord God in Bible versus Quran”.

In the Bible, Paul affirms the Faith in the Son of God by saying that Jesus is the son of God and he is the owner of everything; he is the lord of all.  The Noble Quran says that Jesus is but a Messenger and it is an unforgivable sin when you say or believe that the Almighty Creator has a son or sons; this major sin will lead to the Eternal Fire in the Hereafter.

——————————————————————–

The Sons of the Lord God in the Bible (17)

In the Bible (Galatians 4:1-7), Paul says

What I am saying is that as long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate.  He is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. So also, when we were children, we were in slavery under the basic principles of the world.  But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons.  Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.

——————————————–

Galatians 4:1-7 in four different versions of the Bible:

New International Version

1What I am saying is that as long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate.

2He is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father.

3So also, when we were children, we were in slavery under the basic principles of the world.

4But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law,

5to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons.

6Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”

7So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.

American Standard Version

1 But I say that so long as the heir is a child, he differeth nothing from a bondservant though he is lord of all;

2 but is under guardians and stewards until the day appointed of the father.

3 So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the rudiments of the world:

4 but when the fulness of the time came, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

5 that he might redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

6 And because ye are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

7 So that thou art no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.

English Standard Version

1I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave, though he is the owner of everything,

2but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by his father.

3In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world.

4But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,

5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”

7So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

King James Version

1Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;

2But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.

3Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:

4But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

5To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

6And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

7Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

The Sons of the Lord God in the Quran (17)

The Noble Quran makes the topic of the son(s) of God very clear and says that Allah, the Almighty Creator, has neither a son nor a partner.

In addition, The Quran makes the signs that Jesus was not god very understandable.

The Historical background of the verse 4:172:

The top Christians priests of Najran (the south of Saudi Arabia) went to the Prophet Muhammad and said: ‘O Muhammad, why do you insult our lord?’

Muhammad said: ‘And who is your lord?’

They said: ‘It is Jesus’.

Muhammad: ‘Why, what do I say about him?’ he asked.

They said: ‘You say he is the salve and messenger of Allah!’

Muhammad said to them: ‘It is not shameful for Jesus to be a slave of Allah’.

But they said: ‘It is shameful’,

And then the verse 4:172 (The Messiah, Jesus will never scorn to be a slave unto Allah) was revealed”.

It should be emphasized that it is unforgivable sin to say or to believe that the One Almighty Creator [who is Allah or God or the Lord or Jehovah or whatever name(s) you are giving Him] has a son or Sons.

From the Islamic point of view, the conclusion of this fundamental topic that may establish or destroy one’s faith is that:

Any one who believe that the Almighty Creator has a son or Sons; he messes up his faith and is considered as a disbeliever and in the afterlife he will end up as an eternal inhabitant of the Eternal Hell.

Any one who believes that the Almighty Creator has neither a son nor a partner, he has a good faith and is considered as a believer; and in the afterlife, he will end up as an eternal inhabitant of the Eternal Paradise.

Verses 4:172-173 make the topic of the son(s) of God plain, clear and understandable.

——————————————–

The meanings of verses 4:172-173:

Verse 4:172

The Historical background of the verse:

The top Christians priests of Najran (the south of Saudi Arabia) went to the Prophet Muhammad and said: ‘O Muhammad, why do you insult our lord?’

Muhammad said: ‘And who is your lord?’

They said: ‘It is Jesus’.

Muhammad said: ‘Why, what do I say about him?’ he asked.

They said: ‘You say he is the salve and messenger of Allah!’

Muhammad said to them: ‘It is not shameful for Jesus to be a slave of Allah’.

But they said: ‘It is shameful’,

And then the verse 4:172 (The Messiah will never scorn to be a slave unto Allah) was revealed”.

The meanings of verse 4:172

Jesus, the Messiah, whom you claim is a god or son of God, would never disdain, or scorn or reject haughtily, to be a servant of God, neither would the angels who are nigh, to God, disdain to be Allah’ servants.

this is a splendid digression [to the matter of the angels], and it is mentioned as a refutation of those who claim that the angels are gods or the daughters of God, just as He refuted, with what was stated before, the Christians who claim that which is the subject of the address to them [above]. Whoever disdains to worship Him, and waxes proud, He will assuredly muster all of them to Him in the Hereafter.

In other words, the verse says that Jesus will never scorn to be a slave unto Allah) he will never deny his servitude to Allah.

This was revealed in respect of the top Christians priests of Najran saying to the Prophet: “O Muhammad, what you say of Jesus is shameful”. Allah said to them: it is not shameful that Jesus is Allah’ servant, nor would the favored angels ever not acknowledge that they are servants of Allah. Whoever scorns to acknowledge that being his servant (and is proud) is too proud to believe in Allah, (all such) believers and unbelievers will Allah assemble unto Him on the Day of Judgment.

The meanings of verse 4:173

As for those who believed in Allah, Muhammad and the Quran and did righteous deeds, that are acts of obedience in that which is between them and their Lord, Allah will pay them in full their wages, the reward for faith and deeds, and He will give them more of His bounty, what no eye has seen, no ear has heard and no man’s heart has ever wished for.

And as for them who disdain and are too proud to believe in Allah Muhammad and the Quran, Allah will chastise them with a painful chastisement, which is the chastisement of the Eternal Fire, and they shall not find for themselves, besides God, that is, other than Him, any friend, to ward it off them, or helper, to protect them from it.

In other words, Allah will punish them with a painful doom; and they will not find for them, against Allah, any protecting friend, any relative to benefit them or helper to save them from Allah’s punishment.

===============================

Verses 4:172-173 of the Noble Quran in four different translations:

Verse 4:172

QARIB: the messiah would not despise being a worshiper of Allah, nor would the angels who are near. whosoever despises worshipping him, and becomes proud, he will surely assemble them all to him.

SHAKIR: the messiah does by no means disdain that he should be a servant of Allah, nor do the angels who are near to him, and whoever disdains his service and is proud, he will gather them all together to himself

PICKTHAL: the messiah will never scorn to be a slave unto Allah, nor will the favoured angels. whoso scorneth his service and is proud, all such will he assemble unto him;

YUSUFALI: christ disdaineth nor to serve and worship Allah, nor do the angels, those nearest (to Allah): those who disdain his worship and are arrogant,-he will gather them all together unto himself to (answer).

Verse 4:173

QARIB: as for those who believe and did good deeds, he will pay them in full their wages, and he will increase them from his bounty. as for those who despise and became proud, he will punish them with a painful punishment, and they will find neither a guide nor a helper for themselves, other than Allah.

SHAKIR: then as for those who believe and do good, he will pay them fully their rewards and give them more out of his grace; and as for those who disdain and are proud, he will chastise them with a painful chastisement. and they shall not find for themselves besides Allah a guardian or a helper

PICKTHAL: then, as for those who believed and did good works, unto them will he pay their wages in full, adding unto them of his bounty; and as for those who were scornful and proud, them will he punish with a painful doom. and they will not find for them, against Allah, any protecting friend or helper.

YUSUFALI: but to those who believe and do deeds of righteousness, he will give their (due) rewards,- and more, out of his bounty: but those who are disdainful and arrogant, he will punish with a grievous penalty; nor will they find, besides Allah, any to protect or help them.

How do you Apply Home Tuition on your Youngster?

Now that the urge to start home schooling your child has been settled, get ready for some serious anxiety and the exaltation you get from it. The road ahead can really get bumpy but the rewards that come with it more than make up for the trouble. The act of producing a well-rounded and a well-adjusted personality by all means not an easy task.

Before you start, check out what the laws that governs educations says in your country. Some countries will demand that you file an affidavit with the education departments. Basically, there are three categories of home tuition laws; we have Private School Laws, Equivalency laws and Home Education Laws. You will be required to maintain a portfolio that holds records of your child’s educational progress. It is of a paramount importance to look into the legal requirements before you engage on it. Many countries stipulates a minimum educational qualification for the parent or the-would be tutor, this is normally a minimum of secondary school education for primary school children.

Another thing that should be looked into is some form of a support group. A support group consist of like minded people who will insulate you from the uncalled for criticism, pressure and questions from the regular school goers. Many groups organize events such as visits to the zoo, museum, tours to ice cream shops and other fun events. If your child hit it off with other children taking home tuition, then they will be able to form a long lasting relationship that does not fade away when their other counterparts change school. The groups provide a much needed socialization avenue for your kid.

After you have gone through everything that is needed for the success of your home tuition endeavours, then you need to select a curriculum. Depending on the method you are using, you may choose numerous tools that can be able to aid you in the process. The internet is one rich resource for home tuition and you can do some research and look into the available materials.

After you have set the curricular, ground rules must be set. Home tutoring requires a lot of hard work and self-discipline. Below is a comprehensive list of things that will guide you. These are:

  1. Hard work and effort
  2. Eagerness to learn new things
  3. Discipline
  4. Patience and enough time
  5. Flexibility and enthusiasm

The other very important point to take consideration is to consider why you are opting home tuition for your kid. Your motives and reasons for starting your child on home tutoring is the very pillar on which the whole educative lessons for child depends on. Also it is very advisable to consult your child before you embark on it. Ask them how they feel about home tuitions. Once you and your child agree that home schooling is the best for them, then select a custom- made curriculum that best suits your kid. Record keeping is a very important aspect of your child education. Look and settle for the best method for record keeping and set up a schedule. Your schedule must not necessarily be uniform (6-7 hours a day is not a necessity). Allow the kid to dedicate the time for learning as flexibility and fun are the pillars of home tuition. The child should only learn the skills that they are ready for.

Children make great major advances in learning and show more enthusiasm if they are gently handled. This is the whole secret to a successful home tutoring.
