I received an email through Squidoo from a visitor to my lens in that area. He was wondering about PAs and also the pros and cons of being a PA. I provided him a brief answer and made a decision to write this article.

I’ve loved being a PA and find these items to be the PROs.

Whenever I went to PA college no college degree was recommended to enter. It was a 2 year program and when you qualified, you’re also given a bachelors. I’ve created a great living and had a terrific chance with a two year education.

The pay through the years started from so-so to excellent-Acceptance and understanding of the profession is superb and has made being a PA very pleasant.

The working conditions are terrific and you get to work with the finest and also the brightest most of the time.The work is very challenging every day, although some of it is routine, the duty never ever is.I am thankful for what I do a lot more than 10% of the time (recall the story of the 10 leper) I’m assigned as much responsibility as I can accept. Cons:-I have to get at the very least 50 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) a year. You could get high quality or junk. It requires time and money to get good quality CME if you stay in non-urban areas like I’ve got much of my career. The internet has improved your own choices.

You’ll never be independent. A PA by definition is a dependent practitioner. Although you may “own the business” an MD will usually need to monitor your medical duties. It doesn’t always have to be over-the-shoulder however it has to conform to your state legal guidelines.

You need skills just like any specialist but will always be paid less than an MD typically no matter how great you are. (That doesn’t affect me now but it used to.)

You should get and pass a certifying examination every 6 years or learn a lot of information regarding How To Become A Physician Assistant. That may change but for my whole career it’s been the standard. I have taken and passed it 5 times now. It is an expensive inconvenience.
