The two main types of motivation, intrinsic and extrinsic, both affect the process of learning. Intrinsic motivation derives from an inherent interest in that which is being taught, extrinsic motivation relates to influences externally.

Some students have their own intrinsic motivation or external motivation, others need to be motivated to learn. There are many things that teachers can do in order to motivate their students to learn. Here are several strategies that can be used to motivate students.

– Produce a supportive environment and build trust by greeting students, interacting with them and indicating a genuine concern about them as individuals.

– Highlight the links that exist between effort and outcome.

– Regularly give them reminders that learning is something that requires patience, and that results may take time to see.

– Divide the learning process into digestible pieces for students to take in.

– Reduce students performance anxiety during learning activities.

– Try and make sure that learning tasks given provide a reasonable challenge. They must not be either too difficult or too easy.

– Weak learners are accustomed to experiencing failure so they should be helped to experience success on a more regular basis.

– Students will be more likely to want to learn when they have a greater appreciation of the value of what they are learning, and when they believe that they will succeed by applying a reasonable amount of effort.

The teachers attitude is also critical when it comes to dealing with students. It refers to all that a teacher does or says in class. It concerns a teachers understanding, awareness and approach.

They should have a plan of action in terms of how they relate to their students. It should be realistic, measurable, and flexible. Whilst it would be beneficial to write it down, it is most important to at least know it for themselves; either way they must be sure to adhere to it.
